13-year-old benefits from Foundation program

The SCGA Foundation’s Girls’ Committee hosted its second event of the summer at Wilshire CC on Aug. 14. Led by committee and club member Annie Bartholetti, 15 G.A.M.E. Club girls were invited to Wilshire to learn golf tips from pros Rick Rielly and Mary Jacobs, compete in skills competitions and then enjoy beauty treatments by Serve the Goddess mobile spa. G.A.M.E. Club member Kasey Torres, participating in her second Girls’ Outing, shared why she enjoys these events. “The girls events are different because they focus on things that are probably only of interest to girls. This focus assists me in discovering what’s aspects of the game are important and meaningful to me.”

Only an 8th grader, Kasey is already hopeful that golf will be able to provide her with options after she completes her public school education. “I hope to attend a college or university and with the right amount of practice and perseverance, that someone will find me deserving of a scholarship.  After college I will see how far golf takes me or how far I will take golf.”

Kasey recently competed in the Western States Golf Association’s 32nd annual Alan Bennett Championship in Phoenix, where she won the two-day event.  In addition to winning the championship (which automatically qualifies her for next year’s Junior PGA Championship), Kasey took home the citizenship award.  Candidates were nominated by their golf site coordinator and then had to participate in an interview process that asked about the junior’s past accomplishments and what their dreams and hopes were for the future.  “It was a great experience, but without the SCGA Foundation I would not have been successful in the interview,” said Kasey. “Every time we have had a G.A.M.E. Day, staff would ask us to stand up in front of the hosts and publicly speak, which was a great learning experience for me. Guess what, it paid off!”
