Key partners and leaders were on-hand at Maggie Hathaway GC to celebrate the ceremonial document signing, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation Director Norma E. Garcia-Gonzalez, California State Senator Steven Bradford, LA City Council Member Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Western States Golf Association Vice President Glen Porter, LACC Vice President Joseph Davis and SCGA Junior Golf Foundation Executive Director Kevin Gigax. The signing ceremony also provided an opportunity to generate awareness of the collaborative effort behind this historic project.
“Today we really celebrate a significant milestone of coming together and really envisioning a beautiful golf course for the community here at Maggie Hathaway,” said Garcia-Gonzalez. “We’re so excited because this public-private partnership is going to level us up and give us the wings I think our community so deserves.”
Renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse is leading the Maggie Hathaway GC restoration. This, in conjunction with the development of resources to expand Southern Area Youth Programming and SCGA Junior programming and services, will enhance the facility’s long-standing role as a gathering place in the South Los Angeles community. The refreshed facility will also provide the public with an affordable, accessible outlet to play golf and renew impactful youth development programming.
“I’ve been working in golf for 19 years and this is by far the largest collaboration I’ve ever seen,” said SCGA Junior Golf Foundation Executive Director Kevin Gigax. “Youth development through junior golf is a labor of love for us. We’re really excited about the next iteration of what’s going to happen here.”
After Thursday’s ceremonial document signing, a Community Engagement plan will be implemented by Los Angeles County, American Golf and the Fore Youth Golf Foundation. A project manager will also be hired to prepare full construction plans from the initial designs.
