Annual George Von Elm Memorial Golf Tournament raises more than $5,000 for charity
Since it’s creation in 1957, the George Von Elm Memorial Tournament has raised more than $25,000 to support junior golf in Southern California. This year’s tournament, held last week, raised more than $5,000, a portion of which goes to the SCGA Foundation.
At the 112th SCGA Annual Meeting last Tuesday, Rancho Park GC was honored with the first-ever SCGA Foundation President’s Award for its outstanding dedication and commitment supporting junior golf. George Von Elm won the 1926 U.S. Amateur Championship, defeating Bobby Jones, when he was a member of the Rancho GC in the 1920s. Later, the Ranch GC member became a consultant designer of the 1949 Rancho golf course, before being inducted into the inaugural Southern California Golf Association Hall of Fame class in 2007.
The Rancho Park GC has a unique legacy as keepers of one of the most historic golf courses in the United States, and one that has hosted 20 years worth of PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA, USGA Pub Links and Los Angeles City Championships.
The 2011 George Von Elm Memorial golf tournament was supported by the Bourget Bros., MK Diamond Products, Arto Brick, Mission Beverage, John Stevens, Robert Weisman and Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills.
SCGA Director Lew Murez and his teammate Robert Brown were gross winners, while the net winning team was Robert Shapiro and Brian Baz.
