Recently, the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation held its annual Scholar Reception at Wilshire Country Club where 60 scholars were recognized for their academic achievement. Since the Scholarship Program’s inception in 2008, the Foundation has awarded $2.3 million to nearly 200 scholars. This year, the Foundation will be awarding $230,000 to 54 individual scholars, including 16 new scholars for the class of 2029.

Of those 16 new scholars, seven were selected to represent their class by receiving a Named Scholarship. Named scholarships honor donors who have committed to prolonged sustainment of the scholarship program. Meet this year’s Named Scholars:

COPi Cup Scholar: Jose Chavez

Jose Chavez is a compassionate and dedicated student with a strong commitment to academic excellence and community service. A long-time participant that has participated in the Player & Youth Development program, Play Days, the Foundation Cup and SCGA Junior field trips, where this recipient really shines is his volunteer efforts. He has dedicated over 100 hours of service to supporting junior golfers, motivated to ensure the next generation has the same incredible experience and learn the life lessons he did in the program. He’ll be studying Finance at Cerritos College this fall.

Jim Duff Scholar: Ayuka Yang

Ayuka Yang recipient has been a member of the San Fernando Valley golf community for seven years, advancing through the entire SCGA Junior Player Pathway. A competitor on the SCGA Junior Gold Tour, dedicated Girls Golf eLeader, and frequent volunteer at Woodley Lakes Golf Course, she has consistently demonstrated the sportsmanship, integrity, and leadership that define the Jim Duff Scholarship. This fall, she will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara to study Psychology, and we know she will continue to carry forward the lessons, relationships and love for the game that golf has given her throughout her life.

Deb Long Scholar: Allysara Phantavee

Allysara Phantavee has demonstrated the power of the Player and Youth Development program to enhance her golf skills and gain valuable life lessons. She credits golf and volunteering as the tools that have taught her the importance of empathy and responsibility and has been a consistent supporter of SCGA Junior programs, along with volunteering in hospitals and youth camps. She’ll be attending Chapman University to pursue a degree in Biological Sciences.
